WHY
Daily, millions of Americans depend on mobile telecommunications for a wide range of basic activities including: calling emergency services, searching for employment, staying connected with loved ones, and much more. SafeLink Wireless is a U.S. government supported program for income eligible households provided by TracFone Wireless, Inc. that ensures telephone service is available and affordable for eligible low income households. Over 812,807 households in Tennessee qualify for the Lifeline services.
Consider the following statistics:
-- For people who cannot afford cell phones, being part of today's connected world and performing these crucial day-to-day needs is near impossible.
-- According to the FCC, about 7.1 million households across the nation do not have telephones (July, 2006), and more than 13 percent with an income under $10,000 do not have telephone service.
-- Low income families struggle paying monthly bills, experience credit issues, and cannot afford traditional home phone and wireless services.
-- Using public pay phones regularly pose problems and cell phone contracts often are difficult to maintain due to costly usage charges over long-term agreements.
-- A recent study ("Cell Phones Provide Significant Economic Gains for Low-Income American Households," April 2008) analyzed the impact of mobile phones on low-income households, and uncovered the cell phone is a critical component for personal safety, access to emergency services, and can potentially increase a low-income family's economic productivity and earning power.

SHOCKER!!!! OTHER CITIES FIGHTING CRIME THE RIGHT WAY, BUT NOT MEMPHIS.......

Associated Press - August 10, 2008 8:34 PM ET

HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. (AP) - Helena-West Helena Mayor James Valley says he ordered a round-the-clock curfew and heavy police patrol in a ten-block section of town because the neighborhood was "under siege with repeated gunfire, loitering, drug dealing and other general mayhem."

Valley ordered the emergency curfew Thursday, effective immediately. It was still in place today. He said it would remain in place as long as the problems persist or until the city council can come up with a long-term plan at its August 19th meeting.

AND ANOTHER CITY DOING RIGHT!!!!!!!

Hartford imposes emergency curfew after shootings

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Hartford officials said Monday that they will impose a 30-day citywide curfew on everyone under 18 in response to recent violence, including a shooting over the weekend that left one teen dead and six young people wounded.
"We must do this because we cannot and will not tolerate innocent people, especially children, to be victims," Mayor Eddie Perez said.
Saturday's shooting erupted after the annual West Indian Day parade in the city's North End. Police said 16-year-old Ezekiel Roberts of Hartford was killed, a 7-year-old boy was shot in the head and 15-month-old Zinia Jackson was shot in the left leg. Four other teens were shot.

IF YOU WANT TO SAVE THE WORLD THEN YOU NEED TO GET YOUR TIRE PRESSURE RIGHT.. DONT ASK QUESTIONS JUST DO IT OBAMA SAID SO....

Obama pokes at McCain over tire-pressure issue

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Wednesday taunted Republican candidate John McCain for agreeing on the importance of keeping tires inflated as an energy-conservation measure after having joined the GOP in mocking the idea.

"It will be interesting to watch this debate between John McCain and John McCain," Obama said as he campaigned in Indiana with Sen. Evan Bayh, widely considered a top-tier candidate for running mate.

When asked about the air-pressure issue during an appearance Tuesday night, McCain said: "I agree with the American Automobile Association. We should all inflate our tires." Obama had noted that keeping tires inflated and cars tuned was endorsed by both NASCAR and AAA and should be part of any comprehensive plan to reduce reliance on imported oil.
